South African Women in Science Awards (WISA)

Every year the Department of Science and Technology (DST) calls for nominations for the South African WISA. These awards recognise and reward excellence by women scientists and researchers, and profile them as role models for younger women.

Categories

Awards for Distinguished Woman Researchers

One each in two categories:

  • physical and engineering sciences
  • humanities and social sciences

Awards for Distinguished Young Woman Researchers

One each in two categories:

  • physical and engineering sciences
  • humanities and social sciences

Awards for R&I Leading to Socio-economic Impact and/or the Empowerment of Women

One each in two categories:

  • distinguished woman researcher
  • distinguished young woman researcher

DST Fellowships

  • for four current master's students: two in natural sciences, one in human and social sciences (HSS), and one in indigenous knowledge systems (IKS)
  • for four current doctoral students: two in natural sciences, one in HSS, and one in IKS

TATA Africa Scholarships for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology

  • for three master's students in disciplines where the participation of women is low
  • for three doctoral students in disciplines where the participation of women is low.

Eligibility

The awards will be made to women who are South African citizens or permanent residents.

Application and nomination procedure

Nominations and applications are submitted electronically to the DST for review. Nominations and applications should clearly indicate the category and should be accompanied by the documentation specified for each category. To ensure that all the requirements have been met, applicants are required to complete a checklist.
