Fulbright Scholar Programme

 

A programme of the United States Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. For more information on the Fulbright opportunities contact the U.S Consulate in South Africa or visit their website.

Fulbright African Research Scholar Programme: enables a South African university faculty or research institute professional to conduct research in any discipline at a US academic or research institution for three to nine months.

Fulbright U.S Specialist Programme: The Fulbright Specialist Programme promotes linkages between U.S. academics and/or professionals with their counterparts at South African universities and institutions.

Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Programme: U.S. institutions of higher education may submit proposals to host Fulbright lecturers from abroad for one or both semesters in an academic year.

Study of the U.S Institutes for Scholars: Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSIs) for scholars and secondary educators are post-graduate level academic programmes for mid-career foreign scholars, faculty, practitioners, and secondary educators whose purpose is to strengthen curricula and to improve the teaching about the United States in academic institutions abroad.

Awards for sabbatical study
 The Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT) awards a number of grants each year to support scholarship at South African Higher Education Institutions. These awards are intended specifically for full-time academics undertaking sabbatical study and preference is given to candidates with proven records of teaching and research.

Awards for postgraduate study
The Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT) awards scholarships for postgraduate study at Master's, Doctoral and Postdoctoral level. South African nationals are eligible to apply and preference is given to candidates with a proven record of academic excellence, coupled with financial need, who intend to pursue careers in academia, research or related fields. Applications for study abroad may be considered where the field of specialisation cannot be undertaken locally or in cases where candidates have advanced to a level where international tuition is appropriate to proceed meaningfully in their chosen fields. Preference may be given to candidates undertaking local and/or split-site graduate programmes.

Social Sciences Research Council

 

Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa: Doctoral Dissertation Research Fellowship. The Social Science Research Council offers fellowships to support the completion of doctoral degrees and to promote next generation social science research in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. The fellowships support dissertation research on peace, security, and development topics.
