Overview
Internal funding for research is sourced from the university general operating budget (with a few exceptions), and is managed via sub-committees of the University Research Committee.
The University Research Committee offers the following research grants:
- Block grants: general research grants
- Conference travel: to present at either a local or international conference
- Emerging Researcher Fund: for research needs of those actively participating in the Emerging Research Programme
Equipment grants: for faculty-prioritised strategic equipment items
- Hosting a conference: seed funding for a conference hosted at UCT
- Page costs: to cover publishing in a journal or for book publishing costs
- Short research visit/course: for travel costs related to short research visits/courses abroad
- Start-up grants: for new academic staff, on UCT cost of employment, to kick-start their research at UCT
- Visiting lecturers and visiting scholars grants: to bring South African or international scholars to UCT for short visits
- Alan Pifer Research Award: annual award for top researchers engaged in welfare-related research
- Clough Eastern Religions Study Fellowship: for a short visit to the East to experience Eastern paths of knowledge
- UCT Book Award: for a ground-breaking work by an author or editor in the UCT community (UCT staff members including joint appointment and retired staff)
- Meritorious Publication Award: for books in specialised fields that lack the broad impact of a book receiving the UCT Book Award but nevertheless merit recognition for their contribution, and for promising first-time publication by authors who deserve special recognition and support.
- UCT Fellows' Award: offered annually in recognition of outstanding scholarly work by young academics who have made significant independent contributions to research in their field.
- Vera Davie Study and Research Bursary: bursary for study and research leave
Eligibility for these awards
- All UCT permanent academic staff and T3-contract appointees on academic conditions of service and on UCT cost of employment are eligible.
- This includes those UCT academic staff in the Faculty of Health Sciences who are joint staff of UCT and PGWC (but does not include Registrars).
- The Clough Eastern Religions Study Fellowship, the UCT Book Award and the Meritorious Publication Awards are open to nominations and applications from UCT staff members.
- In the case of page costs for books and journals, authors/editors may be asked to forward royalties to UCT against the grant.
